Today I want to talk a bit about power chords in guitar.
A power chord is sometimes also called the fifth chord and is probably one of the most easiest and popular chords to play on the guitar.
A lot of Rock, Heavy Metal and Alternative and other genres of music makes use of the famous power chord.
Powerchords is almost always used with distortion on the guitar.
A chord usually consists of 3 notes or more to be considered a chord but the power chord only consists of two notes. The root and a fifth.
If we look at the C major scale:
| I | II |
II |
IV |
V |
VI |
VII |
| C | D | E | F | G | A | B |
You will see that the root is C and the fifth note in the scale is G.
Thus to play a C fifth chord we will only use the notes C and G in the C major scale.
The fingering on the guitar would look like this :
E |-----
B |-----
G |--5--
D |--5--
A |--3--
E |------
This chord can also be moved over the fretboard to play the chord in different keys.
A G power chord would look like this:
E |-----
B |-----
G |-----
D |--5--
A |--5--
E |--3---
And an A powerchord would look like this:
E |-----
B |-----
G |-----
D |--7--
A |--7--
E |--5---
Notice that the form or pattern of the chord stays the same.
