Hey Nebe,
Maybe we need a seperate section for this, i dunno ;)
With the recent addition of streaming support to the site and the option to allow either streaming only or with downloading, a question:
Can I release snippets of works to stream but are still copyrighted by myself in that I still retain distribution rights?
In other words, can I license dark.za.org to stream them, but still enforce my copyright if I find copies on the web?
Is this possible? Is it a reasonable stance for an artist to take?
Reason I'm asking is that I often have parts of music that I am working on that I would like others to hear, but do not want it in the public domain as the finished and polished versions I would like to offer for sale later.
This is also the delimma and reason I've been holding back putting up something new.
Thanks,
TM.
Licencing
Well it was kinda the idea why I added the streaming support.
To give artists on the page a bit more flexibility on how they would like to present their music to the public.
I feel the same way, I want certain users to listen to my music but I don't want to give it away for free either except when I make certain experimental internet tracks.
I know it is sometimes very difficult getting a record or distribution deal if you have free music floating around.
So yes I think it is a great idea if you licence the work to dark.za.org. This way you will still have a good foot to stand on when people are distributing your work illegaly.
Just make sure you add your copyright notice to the same node as the audio.
I can unfortuanately not guarantee that people wont be able to illegaly obtain a track from the website I did make sure to make it at least difficult. I have for example not included any audio in the RSS feeds. So people cant leech music from the site with music/audio aggregators.
Thanks for starting this topic because it is a important topic to discuss...
I also think it is time that I added some rules and regulations for dark.za.org
Great
Kewl, thanks dude. Your reply is clear, thorough and covers my question pretty well :)
I'm planning on adding some previews from my experimental mixes in the upcoming weeks, I'll ask if I have any problems with the interface or other questions.
