Oscillators

In this article I will be discussing oscillators. Now to some of you this may sound like science fiction but actualy it's very simple.

A osscilator in a synthesizer generates a waveform. Since sound is produced from waves a synthesizer uses it's oscillators to produce these waves.

A synthesizer ussualy has 1 to 4 four oscillators which means that if your synthesizer has 2 oscillators it can generate 2 waveforms at the same time.

The frequency at which the oscilator resonates determines the pitch of the sound.

When you are new to music it is sometimes a bit difficult to get started without knowing some basic music theory. Music theory can be usefull in many occasions and offers a great opportunity for you to test these theories and get familiar with what their end result sounds like.

I will start my first lesson with the Major Scale. If we inspect the C major scale we will imediatly notice that it is all the white keys on a piano or keyboard. It has no sharps or flats.

This article discusses how to use soundfonts through VST if you:

A) Need free live instruments to add to your music, or just want to get started with a General MIDI sample bank.

B) Your application has VST capability but does not load soundfonts or others.

It's been a while since I have written any articles so I hope that this one will satisfy your curiosity.

In this article I will be discussing Filters. Almost every synthesizer has a filter. Filters are sometimes called a VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter) but this is more common on analogue equipment.

What a filter does is it takes the audio or sound it receives from the oscillators (See Synthesis Basics - Part 1) and starts cutting frequencies of the top, middle or bottom frequencies.

Today I want to talk a bit about power chords in guitar.

A power chord is sometimes also called the fifth chord and is probably one of the most easiest and popular chords to play on the guitar.

A lot of Rock, Heavy Metal and Alternative and other genres of music makes use of the famous power chord.

Powerchords is almost always used with distortion on the guitar.

A chord usually consists of 3 notes or more to be considered a chord but the power chord only consists of two notes. The root and a fifth.
